The Lantern Across the Harbor
A small dinghy kept a lantern in its ribs. Not a bright lantern — just enough to find the pilings in the fog. One night the harbor was all silver and quiet, and the dinghy rowed out to see why the seals were so still.
They were sleeping on a black rock, breathing like bellows made of silk. The dinghy dimmed its lantern so as not to wake them, and listened to the water tap the hull: a slow metronome, a lullaby with no words.
